During the Depression, his father was the foreman at the Gaines Ranch, but when his Mother and Father moved to Kansas City, he moved with them working a myriad of jobs including a stint at Dye Candy Company and as a cloth spreader.  Later he worked as a farm laborer back in Henry County and while he could have obtained a farm deferment from World War II, he enlisted with the Army and served in combat on Leyte in the Philippines, Okinawa, and in occupied Korea.  He earned a Purple Heart and the distinguished Bronze Star for bravery.

It was during a leave following his basic training that he married Beulah Long of Clinton on February 12, 1944.  After his discharge on December 18, 1945, he returned to Clinton and met his year old son Richard for the first time.  Initially working at Booth Hatchery, he began a painting  business before returning to the Kansas City area with employment at Ford Motor, Westinghouse and finally General Motors where he used previously gained painting expertise to become a painter on their assembly line.  In 1953 he moved his family to a farm in Peculiar, establishing a foothold in farming while commuting to General Motors daily.  In 1957, he and Beulah purchased a farm in western Henry County where he raised cattle and hogs until his retirement in 1992.  He was a member of the White Oak Church and served on church, school and township boards as well as a 4-H leader.  After retirement, he and Beulah moved to Clinton and joined the Clinton Methodist Church.

His greatest pride and priority was always his children and grandchildren, especially delighting toddlers which brought the greatest twinkle to his eye.  He was blessed with a large extended family which included many beloved nieces and nephews and their children.  He is loved by his family for his unconditional love, his integrity and his never wavering support.  He worked hard and stood firmly for his convictions.

He was predeceased by a daughter Sharon in 1995, a grandson Allen in 2006, and his wife Beulah in 2008.  Mourning his departure are his sons Richard (Joyce) Moore, Mike (Elaine) Moore, daughter Jane (Dudley) Leonard, sister Hazel White and 40 grand, great-grand, and great-great grandchildren.
