Norma Louise Birdsong was born March 11, 1925 in Warren, IN, the daughter of L.R. & Clara Merchant McCombs. She grew up in Rich Hill, Missouri, attended all years of school there, and graduated from Rich Hill High School in 1943.
Norma married Victor Birdsong on February 9, 1945 and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage before his death on July 10, 2013. During their marriage, they lived in Harrisonville, Missouri, Joplin, Missouri and Prairie Village, Kansas before moving to Clinton, Missouri in 1967 when they purchased what became Golden Valley Building Supply.
After moving to Clinton, Norma started working at McFarland's Sewing Center on the north side of the square. She later purchased the store and owned and operated it for many years before retiring in 1995. She valued the great friendships she made over the years with her customers.
Norma enjoyed community service and volunteered with the Golden Valley Hospital Auxiliary and the Henry County Museum. She was a longtime member of the Clinton First Baptist Church and taught and worked in the first grade Sunday School there for over thirty years.
Norma had many hobbies and interests including a love of big band era music, crossword puzzles, and card games of all kinds, especially pinochle, canasta, and bridge. She was a member of a couple of bridge clubs. Dementia ended her volunteer work, puzzle working, and bridge games, but try as it may, it could never destroy the love she had for her family and friends.
Norma is survived by her son David and his wife Jill, granddaughter Lauren, and nieces and nephews Bob (Carolyn) McCombs, Rick (Peggy) McCombs, Larry McCombs, Susan L. McCombs, Dennis (Beth) Diehl, Wanda (Gordon) Turner, Joyce (John) Giacone, Pam (John) Clifton, Kevin (Brenda) Diehl, and niece-in-law, Susan McCombs and their families. She was also close to Vic's cousins Ann Price Springer and her husband Rob, and Nancy Price Lewis and her late husband Ron. In addition to Norma's husband Vic, she was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister and their spouses Delmar (Ilene) McCombs, Melvin McCombs, Denzil (Doris) McCombs, and Dorothy (Orville) Diehl, and nephews Mike McCombs and Jim McCombs.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vansant-Mills Funeral Home, Clinton, Missouri.
