Obituary

Mary Agnes Schreck, age 92, passed away April 24, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City.

Born December 12, 1920 in Arnold, Kansas to Henry and Adelheid "Ada" (Fonke) Schreck, she grew up on a farm in Marienthal, Kansas in the midst of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, a struggle compounded by the death of her father when she was 12 years old. These hardships helped forge her independence and strong resolve, and fostered her life-long acts of generosity and caring for others. She was a long-time teacher, first in tiny country schools in western Kansas, helping her family make ends meet with her meager paycheck. In 1946 she embarked on a 27-year career as a fourth grade teacher in Leoti where she was nominated for Kansas Teacher of the Year in 1950. She was widely respected and loved by students many of whom kept in contact with her throughout her life. Agnes was especially devoted to children, caring for nieces, nephews, and any young person in need of a helping hand or open heart, often at great cost to herself. Agnes was exceptionally talented as a writer, musician and problem solver. She took it upon herself to learn about health care and finances in order to better care for loved ones and maintain her own independence even in her 90s. She was a dedicated, caring daughter to her mother for many years followed by 11 years of full care for her mom's invalid sister, Aunt Frances and then caring for her Uncles Harry and Bill Fonke in Clinton, Missouri.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her younger sister Mildred in 1935 and brothers John, Victor, Frank and Father Joseph Schreck.

Surviving are her sisters Adalia "Dale" Morin (Denver, Co) and Sister Margaret Schreck (Concordia, Ks), 21 nieces and nephews, many dear cousins and faithful friends throughout the country and in her adopted hometown of Clinton.
