Jean was born September 15, 1928 to Homer and Josephine (Gunn) Mintun in Clinton, Missouri. On July 8, 1950, he and Wilma Jean Whitchurch were joined in marriage and to this union, two children were born-Peggy Sue and Mark Lyman.
Jean lived in Clinton his entire life except for the two years he was in the United States Army, serving in the Korean Conflict. He worked as a welder before beginning his career with the State Casket Company in l961. He later purchased the State Casket Company and operated it until his retirement in l999. He and Wilma Jean also owned 40 acres in the Calhoun area and raised a few cattle for several years before selling their operaton due to their age and health.
Jean was a devoted family man and loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great granddaughter dearly. He loved the Lord and served as a Sunday School Teacher for several years at the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was elected to and served on the Clinton City council. He bowled on a weekly league for many years and was an accomplished fisherman, enjoying taking his fishing boat out as often as possible. He caught countless crappie over the years which he cleaned and brought home for Wilma Jean to fry for the family and shared with friends. Jean collected coins, and since he knew of his terminal illiness for a few weeks before his death, he had the pleasure of giving his collection to his kids and grandkids which brought him great joy. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion, both in Clinton. In recent years, he liked to buy old rods and reels at garage sales and auctions, cleaned them up and fixed them and resold them on the annual city-wide garage sale day in Clinton. He really enjoyed talking to folks buying fishing rods from him and had many return customers year after year. His health precluded him from fishing for the past couple of years which he greatly missed. He also liked to go to the "coffee shop" to visit with friends.
He was preceded in death by her parents, and seven siblings, Hugh, Tom, Joe, Geraldine, Mary, Charles and Josephine.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wilma Jean of the home; one daughter Peggy Arthur and husband Ron of Clinton; one son Mark Mintun and wife Mary of Chesterfield, Missouri; three grandchildren, Amanda Todd and husband Chad of Olathe, Kansas, Joseph Mintun and Thomas Mintun both of Chesterfield, Missouri; one great-granddaughter, Peyton Todd of Olathe, Kansas; one brother Jim Mintun and wife Donna of Clinton, Missouri and a number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
