On July 31st, 1920, Nellie Mullins was picking peaches when, as she said, "I went in and had a baby!" As it were, that issue was Grover Cleo Mullins. Nellie was married to Knova Mullins of Houstonia, Missouri. Grover worked on the farm until at an early age he went to find his fortune. When World War II began Grover hadn't found his fortune and was inducted into the U. S. Army Air Force and was stationed at Molesworth AFB England in 1943. Like a substantial portion of the men and planes of the 8th Air Force, the B-17 in which he was flying went down in wartime Germany. After jumping from the "Sky Wolf" on January 11, 1944 he was captured and made a POW at Stalag 17b. In April of 1945 he was freed by elements of Patton's Third Army. Coming to Windsor, he operated restaurants, was an auctioneer, owned his own business, worked for the Civil Service at Whiteman AFB, and became mayor of Windsor. In the meantime, "G. C.", as the family called him, married Joan Garoutte (1930-2016) in 1948 and they raised two boys, John (J.D.) and Gary. Grover is survived by two sisters, Helen and Pauline, and one brother, Huston. He was preceded by brothers, Louis, Ralph, and Knova, Jr. (K.C.)
Grover was one of the "Greatest Generation." He worked for everything he had and was generous to those who needed a hand. Grover valued honesty and straightforwardness. He was a Freemason and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, and Purple Heart for his military service. "Things generally work out for the best," was his life's motto. His last days were at the VA Center in Warrensburg, MO. where he was nicknamed by the nursing staff, "Sweet Grover." There are no words to express the depth of feeling by which he will be missed, but we do have the many memories to treasure of those times we had............and Thank You, Nellie.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Vansant-Mills Funeral Home of Clinton, Missouri.
