Donald was the oldest of nine children of Clyde and Mildred Wirsig. He was raised west of Deepwater on the family farm and graduated from Deepwater High School in 1950. He was drafted in the United States Army and served his country in the Korean Conflict as Sergeant, but rarely spoke of his experience once he returned home. He married Ruby Eversole on March 1, 1953, to this union they had two children, Steven Brent and Joanna Beth. During his years he was actively involved with the Deepwater School Board, serving on the board during the time Deepwater and Lowry City consolidated their schools into what is now known as Lakeland R-III. He was a lifelong active member of the Deepwater Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder the majority of his adult life. Each year he enjoyed a summer vacation with his family and was able to visit all of the continental United States. Donald farmed and raised beef cattle with his brothers Marvin and Melvin, and nephew Jason. The Wirsig brothers invested in dump trucks and hauled rock to supplement their incomes. Donald was easily recognized as the Wirsig who drove the end dump truck, chewing a cigar, with a faithful dog by his side. On March 19, 1990 Donald's wife, Ruby, passed away after 37 years of marriage. Following losing Ruby, Donald was blessed to have Myrna Beebe Wagoner come into his life and they married on November 14, 1993. Donald and Myrna enjoyed traveling and visiting children and grandchildren who lived out of state. Don was dearly loved by Myrna's children and grandchildren. Don treated and loved Myrna's grandchildren as his own, and to them, he was truly "Grandpa".

Donald was preceded in death by wife, Ruby Eversole Wirsig, and brother, Marvin Wirsig.
