Lucky Me by Donald Goslin

Lucky me, Donald Eugene Goslin. My parents were Laura and Henry Goslin. I had three brothers. Their names are Franklin Goslin, Harold Goslin, and Jimmy Goslin. I was the third one in the family, Jimmy came along after me. I had a very good life. As a teenager and young kid, when I was born, January the 14 th of 33, right in the midst of the Great Depression. We had plenty to eat, we had an old milk cow, and chickens. We got a long pretty good. And as a teenager, or I guess before I was a teenager, we gathered up newspapers and stuff for the war effort. After 1941, after the war started, I was 9, 10 years old, and we gathered up sheet metal and tin, cans, and anything that was metal we'd take to help the war effort. And then got to high school, I never did like school, never did, I got to high school and flunked out the class, that made me one credit short of graduating in 1950, At that time, I already signed up for the Air Force. On my way, to the train to San Antonio Texas, we heard them talking about Korea, we had never heard of Korea, didn't know what it was. We got down there; they herded us through Basic Training. We were supposed to be there for 13 weeks, in 9 weeks they pulled us out of Basic Training and sent us to Tyndall Field, Florida, to Air Police school. That was lucky me, I came on home and had a ten day delay in route before I went overseas; I went overseas and spent two years at an RAF base in Northern England. We had B29s, and being in the military police we had to guard those B29s (Never lost a one, Lucky me). On the way back, the planes took off and came back to the states, and we were there by ourselves, so they put me in communications, and I worked the switch board. It was nice and warm in there; I didn't freeze to death like I did in the military police out guarding those planes. So lucky me, they sent me home back to the states, after my two years was up, just about to the day I got back to the states and took a bus all the way from Fort Dix New Jersey, back to Clinton. They had bus service back in those days, but lucky me, I got back and they stationed me in Shreveport, Louisiana. I was still in the military police, but when I got down there, they had an overage of those also, so they put me back into communications. I was working the switch board one night, about 2 o'clock in the morning and had a call come in. It was a girl down at the southern bell switch board. She wanted to visit, to stay awake, cause she didn't want to go to sleep during her break. Well lucky me I made a blind date with her. That was on Saturday night, then on Sunday we went to the Methodist Church there, close by where she lived and we dated ever since, that was on March the 15 th , and on June the 28 th . We got married and have been married for 66 years. During those 66 years we raised four children, Rodney, Carol, Linda, and Diane. Now we have 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In August of 1953 I was honorably discharged, and we moved to Clinton where I went to work for my Dad at Goslin GMC Truck and Garage, where I worked for 35 years. In 1988 Jim Raysik bought my GMC Franchise and I started farming full time. After farming for 30 years, I retired.
